We Are The Mother Daughter Team Behind Kimihia Resources

Our resources have been popular in Early Childhood Centres and Primary schools since their introduction in the early 90s.

They integrate Māori language, movement and music in a fun and creative way.

Kimihia Resources was formed in 1991 by Ngārangi Naden

Ngārangi (Te Whānau-ā-Apanui, Ngāti Awa, Whakatohea) has been a teacher for over 50 years. She was born in Raukokore, grew up in Opōtiki and attended Opōtiki and Pōtaka primary schools. She attended Queen Victoria School on a scholarship in the footsteps of her mother Hārete McLaughlin (nee Āpiata). She trained at Auckland Teachers College where she met her husband Joe Naden (Ngāti Ruawaipū). They had five tamariki, one who died at the age of 13. Nō reira, moe mai rā e te taonga Andrea (1967-1980).

Ngārangi is an art specialist in KKM and a published author of children’s stories. She holds an advanced teaching degree in TESSOL (Teaching English in Schools to Speakers of Other Languages).

“My vision is to create resources that assist teachers to implement te reo Māori in their classrooms”.

Her daughter, Mihinoa (Maxine), also a teacher, joined the company in 2008 but had been involved since the beginning.

She was born in Tāmaki Makaurau and learnt the ukulele from her mum at the age of four. She got her first guitar at the age of seven when they lived in Pōneke. She is mainly responsible for the musical side of things in the company. In 1998 she had her baby girl, Billie Ngārangi Kamaea, and graduated with an M.A. (Hons). What a cool year!

"My vision is to have every Māori child validated through being meaningfully represented in their learning environments."
